Default The Encryption and Security Library is CLOSED!

According to Slashdot, two file-sharing sites, library.nu and ifile.it were shut down earlier today.

As some of you may be aware, I had posted a library of stuff on ifile.it. All of that material is now effectively lost.

I'll have to give some thought to finding a new hosting site, but I'm not too optimistic -- file sharing sites seem to be dropping like flies of late.

All this is without SOPA -- one can only imagine what it would have been like if SOPA would have been in force!

What has happened, is that, over time copyright infringement has been transformed from a civil to a criminal matter.

Years ago, copyright infringement was totally a civil manner -- if you suspected someone infringed your copyrights, you sued them in civil court for damages, and paid your own legal costs. Over the last 10-15 years, the content cartels (e.g. MPAA/RIAA, etc.) have poured enormous money into political contributions, which have paid off handsomely. Once copyright infringement became a criminal offence, the cartels no longer had any enforcement costs -- your tax dollars pay for the cartel's enforcement costs now. Basically, DHS and the FBI are now involved.

These guys (i.e. Megaupload) are being treated as if they were Mexican drug barons. In addition to being arrested, all their assets have been seized, cash, cars, houses, bank accounts, etc. leaving them completely and totally destitute. They haven't even got so much as two nickels to rub together to pay for a legal defence--it's so much easier to win this way, isn't it? In essence, they've been punished before they've even been tried and found guilty.

My undestanding is that the ifile.it dudes shut down voluntarily, lest they suffer the very same fate.

How do you stop this? Simple. You don't. The content cartels bought and paid for the Representatives and Senators, who in turn, enacted the laws the cartels wanted. Now that these laws have been enacted, the chances of their being overturned are essentially NIL.

I doubt it. It seems to require Java, and I absolutely refuse to use sites that require Java.

It is a shame that money makes the world go round.

    That blows!

That's terrible. I'm a musician, and the whole concept of somebody being arrested over copyright infringement is ridiculous. Worse things are on the way.
